I don't think "good relations" is the right way to describe the intentions of the United States towards Russia.
I think that the US and Russia are still interacting the same way they did during the Cold War: they compete for power and influence in third countries like the Ukraine, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan, and then have tense discussions about limiting nuclear weapons.
I think the nuclear weapons are probably the most important reason that the US and Russia try to talk to each other. Both countries distrust the other, but both countries know that the consequences of nuclear war would be disastrous.
